To gain access to the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility (NDNF), all cleanroom users must complete the process outlined in the steps below. Steps 1-3 can be completed in any order.

Before beginning the process, users external to the University should contact Mark Richmond, NDNF Lab Manager (mrichmon@nd.edu) for guidance on obtaining Notre Dame credentials.

Note: The steps typically require two weeks to complete, so external users are encouraged to start the process well in advance of their expected arrival date to avoid delays.

NDNF Lab Operations and Safety Procedures Manual

  1. Complete the Lab Safety Fundamentals Training*, offered online by Notre Dame Risk Management and Safety. Register for this training through eNDeavor, via inside.nd.edu. Once completed, add the date successfully completed to the Lab User Agreement (see step 3).
  2. Carefully read the NDNF Lab Operations and Safety Procedures Manual (above), then fill out the the Lab User Agreement on the last page of the manual.
  3. Complete the Cleanroom Safety Overview with Dr. Patrick Fay, NDNF Lab Director. Schedule this training by emailing Dr. Fay (pfay@nd.edu). Once completed, add the date completed to the Lab User Agreement (see step 2).
  4. When steps 1-3 are completed, email the completed Lab User Agreement and a picture of yourself (from the shoulders up) to Mark Richmond (mrichmon@nd.edu) to request a facility access badge.
  5. Set up an iLab account. Directions for establishing an account are available on the Scheduling page.
  6. When steps 1-5 are completed, Mark Richmond will contact the user to schedule a cleanroom orientation and walk-through that covers general operations, gowning procedures, and safety inside the cleanroom. During this session, the facility access badge will be issued, and users can indicate the tool-specific training they will require for their projects.
  7. Email staff-ndnf-list@nd.edu to schedule the tool-specific training identified in step 6.

All trained users will automatically be added to a Google Group for email lab communication and be given access to a shared Google folder that contains additional information on the function and use of the cleanroom equipment.

*In eNDeavor, the initial three-part training course is SC_00041C. The annual refresher course is SC_00038. If you have completed SC_00041C for access to another lab on campus and are up to date with the annual refresher course, update the Lab User Agreement and proceed to step 2.

Ongoing Requirements

  • All users of the NDNF must attend the annual mandatory safety orientation at the beginning of the fall semester and keep up to date on the Risk Management Lab Safety Fundamentals Training. You will receive an email notice when it is time to register for and complete the annual refresher course.
  • Users must follow laboratory procedures and protocols at all times.
